Complete Remission
Mom and Dad made yet another trip to Dallas this morning for a 10:00 AM doctor's appointment. We have become accustomed to a bit of uncertainty as to what will happen in each of her appointments at Medical City, so it wasn't surprising that all we knew for sure today was that Mom would receive a 3-hour infusion to strengthen her bones as well as the results from her recent biopsy.
11:00 AM passed without much ado and Mom needed some lunch to help her take her medicine. So, I headed out to snatch a couple of burrito bols from across the street. Mom had already said she thought everything must be fine, or she would be a higher priority for Dr. Bhushan. :-)
Finally around noon, Dr. Bhushan's PA came over to meet with Mom. Smiling, she was quick and to the point: Mom was in "perfect" condition ...100% cancer free!!
We were a bit taken back - We didn't expect the news to be that categorical!!
After several rounds of Thalidomide, Velcade, more Thalidomide, three rounds of chemo, an auto stem cell transplant, 27 days in the hospital, 41 days of transplant recovery, a couple dozen orange popsicles, two full-time caretakers, and MANY MILLIONS of prayers, Mom is in complete remission.
Obviously, a little dinner celebration was in order tonight as well as shopping for a new tube of lipstick to match Mom's upcoming stint as a bona fide blond (boy, those stem cell transplants do wonders!) ;-)
As for what lies ahead, Mom will continue to be monitored on a bi-weekly basis to ensure her white blood cell counts rebound completely. After that, she will undergo maintenance therapy to ward off any unwelcome myeloma cells. Even though there is no cure for myeloma, we know we have achieved the best result possible at this time. We hope this remission will last long enough for Erin's prayer request from last year to be answered - that is for cancer research, specifically multiple myeloma research, to progress at amazing speed.
We think this is perfect timing with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a Lil' Sears just right around the corner.
All the best
Mica
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
- Psalm 23

My Sweet Paula,
This is the greatest news to hear. God is truly good. Though we sometimes miss His lessons, He blesses us each day.
I am sitting at the Cincinnati airport thinking about how much we missed you at the AMATYC Conference. You have so many friends among our TexMATYC and Southwest regional affiliates. Everyone sends you best wishes, and all are looking forward to seeing you next year in Minneapolis.
Love you,
Mel

Paula,
I am more delighted than I can say at this good news! I miss everyone at NTCC, but you have always held a special place in my heart. I am so pleased that you will soon be able to resume your activities back at school. Now you will have the opportunity to enrich even more people's lives as you have always done.

God took one look at you and said my daughter you still have work to do for me on Earth. Praise God and get back to His work. I can not wait until Austin to see you again. Don't miss TexMATYC this year.

Paula and Family,
Our pastor preached this morning on "no small miracles"; truly, you know the meaning of that better than anyone! I am so grateful your family saw fit to share it with the rest of us. And, I am so grateful to God that He has seen fit to work through our medical powerbrokers to get you on your feet! God bless you.

....from whom all blessings flow.....that's the tune in my head. I've been waiting to get this email, somehow I knew that the outcome would be nothing less than miraculous.
On another note; Mica has an amazing gift with words and I hope she will continue to share that gift with the world. I don't know if she's considered becoming an author but as I sit here with my Career hat on....I would encourage her as she definitely possesses the talent!
Looking forward to seeing you soon. JJ

Hi Wilhites:
Happy Thanksgiving! I know it's even that more special because you have so much to be thankful for, and often until there's a "bump in the road" we don't take a breath from the hectic and busy rush of it all to count our blessings. Sad, but true. So, savor this day and even though I'll be rooting for the Aggies with Greg, Hook 'Em Horns Erin and Go Hogs Mica!

Dearest Wilhites,
I praise God for his blessings to your wonderful, deserving family. I am just now reading the good news because from September until December 12, my husband Jack was involved in his own battle with cancer, specifically leukemia and melanoma, and sadly he lost his battle December 12. But I am grateful that he is in a better place and not suffering as he was then. I am keeping busy with my grandsons and remembering Jack with both joy and pain. We were married only four years, all of which were good.
I have been keeping up with your family as much as possible from my friends who work at NTCC. May God bless you all; little Sears is/will be a lucky baby to come into such a family.
Love,
Minnie Laughton Birdsong
