Hook'em Horns

How exciting! The Longhorns have just won the BCS National Championship! Congrats to Erin and Kale! :-)

Mom's appointment with Dr. Bhushan today was good and informative. In terms of her 3-month treatment plan, we learned she has about a 70% chance of responding well. But after seeing how well she was doing today, Dr. Bhushan thought it might be higher than that. He also said that Mom had "light chain" myeloma - a variation of the illness that gives better foresight to what her risk factors might be.

He began telling us some pertinent information Mom will need to consider if/when the time is right to plan for a bone marrow transplant. Since siblings have a 90% chance of being a match, Aunt Jean will probably be contacted by UT Southwestern in the next month (I hope someone in our family has a chance to call her before she reads this post!)

After our appointment this afternoon and before heading back to Mt. Pleasant to watch the game, Mom was now craving crab legs. So, we swung by AW Shucks on Greenville and shared a platter of corn, potatoes, shrimp, and yes ... crab legs. It was great - and Mom was felt full afterwards. I guess addressing these cravings is another important component of her treatment. :-)

Mom and Dad's next trip to Dallas will be Monday for an MRI. And between her 3-month regime and the end of the college football season, we now have our sights set on March Madness.

Cheers
Mica

Even though I claim the Aggies and Horn Frogs as my teams, I am proud for the Longhorns and how they represented the state of Texas. I'm not sure that they are the best team but I am sure that Vince Young is the best quarterback.

I haven't been contacted by a family member but I hope they know I will be willing to do any thing at any time to help Paula recover. All I ask is for them to let me in on a few of those wonderful dinners they have been telling us about!

Thank you so much for sharing all of this information with us. I love you all.

Wow! What an exciting game that was last night. I hope John was able to contain himself and did not go after Paula too strongly! I'm also excited about the news from Paula's MD! That sounds like a great percentage to me and I know that you're going to respond fabulously in every way. Paula, the offer still stands...if Jean doesn't happen to match I'll be next in line if the time comes. Of course, just the thought of getting some of my marrow in you might "scare you straight" but that would be OK, too. I have been hoping that you are seeing great colors in these numbers that the MD's are throwing at you but maybe after last night you are only seeing burnt orange.
    Hook 'em!

Hi Paula. I just found out that you were battling cancer and Mary Hearron gave Pam this website. I think of you alot ('cause your my mentor!). I'm not sure I'm doing this "blog-thing" right, it's my first time on a blog. Love ya and do what the docs say! Beverly

Congrats on the Longhorns victory! Maybe that brought that percentage rate of your recovery up a few points!! I hope that Jean is a perfect match if you need a bone marrow transplant. I am on the national donor registry (an EASY thing to do through Stewart Blood Center, just a finger prick!), so maybe if you need some more and Mary doesn't have enough...:)
I'm so glad to hear the positive news from the dr. and your food cravings are just cracking me up!

    Paula,
Thanks for keeping your Top Crew family in the loop. You know we miss you terribly and can't wait for your return. Those Longhorns were SO awesome. I wish the Cowboys had a quarterback named Vince. Things are progressing nicely here at the college. Don't worry we'll register every other student for a math class come registration next week. My best to you and your, Love, JJ

    PW,
You may or may not be aware that some of your students use this abbreviation in their classnotes to denote areas that you feel may need "special" attention. It was during one particularly difficult study session that I decided that it meant that the PoWer from above would be the only way in which I discovered the meaning (or purpose) of the topic.

I am certain that the PoWer from above will continue to bless you and your family in the same way that you bless the lives of each and every student you have touched.

You all are in my thoughts and prayers!

    In His love,
    Sheri

    Paula,

It was soooo great to see you this morning! As always, you were dressed impeccably, and the 'Horns shirt was perfect. You know I wanted to give you the biggest hug, but realized that it would probably be painful. So, as Linda suggested, I hugged you with my eyes and in my heart. I hope you felt it!

    Paula,
It was great to see your beautiful smile on campus this morning. As usual, you looked terrific!!...a bit tired, but as neat as always. My prayer is for safe traveling mercies to Dallas Monday for your MRI. I love this blog as your daughters keep us up to date so well. Keep the smile, you are surrounded by many angels and prayers.

    In His Love,
    Linda B.

    Hi Paula,

You know burnt orange is an aberration of beautiful, unadulterated red. Oh....what a thought......burnt orange underwear!

Go Red Raiders! Sadly...the Red Raiders did not win their bowl game. We always support our Texas teams.

    Love you,
    Mel

    Paula,
I too was delighted with UT's win. I was so nervous I couldn't sit and watch the game. I kept getting up and leaving the room. Chip would holler"Jeanni you can come back now!" I screamed so loud when they won I woke Colt up who had fallen asleep on the couch.
You continue to be in all of our prayers. Glenna will be home this weekend for RB's and Doris's memorial services. I will miss Doris, she was such a lady. Just like you. I have had such wonderful role models since our move to East Texas. Let us know if there is anything we can do or if I can prepare you something to address your latest craving.
    In faith and Love,
