Guacomole for 5
It is a rainy day here in Dallas, but the Wilhites are having the calmest day we've experienced in over a week.
Yesterday, we had a very good discussion with Dr. Bhushan that lasted more than an hour. He took the time to patiently and thoroughly describe the causes and symptoms of myeloma as well as outline the most promising treatment options available today - all of which gave us good reason to be optimistic about the future.
She and Dad will go back tomorrow for a bone marrow and other needed tests so that Dr. Bhushan can give us his specific treatment recommendations on Monday.
Mom would like you to know how strongly she feels your good wishes and prayers. From meeting and liking Dr. Bhushan, to hearing all the good treatment options she will likely have available, we know that God is answering our prayers and we are blessed.
To celebrate our good day, the five of us had dinner last night at Mi Cocina and promptly ordered a plate of fresh guacomole because Mom was craving it. I guess it's the cancer thing - Dad used to crave tacos. :-)
Happy Christmas Shopping

Hola mi amigos! Oh,sorry. I got a little carried away with the guacomole story. As much as I would like to say I am quite fluent in espanol now (after taking Jim Swanner's class about 3 times) that is far from the truth. Well, a bone marrow test, huh? OK, this is to let you know that if you need a little extra, I'll be first in line to share what I have. Just say the word.
Paula, I happened to run into Jerry Wesson yesterday and we visited about your situation. He asked me to let you know that you will be in his and Barbara's constant prayers and thoughts. He has also come through some great trials the last couple of years.
I want to share with all of you guys a bookmark that was left under my office door yesterday or today. The words inscribed are "Faith sees in invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible." I don't know what angel left this under my door but I do believe that it was meant to be shared with you and your family.
Thanks Mica and Erin for all you are doing to help us keep up with Paula's experience. Please, please let us know if there is anything that we can do back in MP. Forgive us if we ever say or do the wrong thing. We love you all and would give anything if we could somehow divide your burden up into a million pieces to be carried by Paula's million friends and loved ones. Keep the faith.

Sweet Paula,
I'm thinking of you in the mornings, afternoons, evenings, and even at 3 a.m. when I get up with Grace (she's had 2 ear infections). At all these times, I say a prayer for you, plus I send you happy thoughts. I hope you've been receiving them!
I was thinking yesterday about the letter of rec that I wrote for you and about some of the things I had to cut out of it due to lengthiness (it was originally 3 pages long...there were so many good things to say about you!!) Anyway, some of the personal attributes that I wrote about were your inner strength, courage, and determination. Paula, these are the very attributes that will pull you through these tough times. God has equipped you for this battle. You will win it! Angels are all around you...night and day.
So if you are up at 3 a.m. (or any other time probably), I hope that you think of me and Gracie and know that we're thinking of you and sending our happy thoughts. Reach out and catch them. I love you dearly.
Your forever student, friend, and colleague, Leah Reagan

Well, if you have to have a "cancer craving" I can't think of anything better than good Mexican food surrounded by family!! I'm with Mary...you need the marrow, I've got plenty to spare too (although I think you'll have a long line of potential donors :) Plus, you still owe this history nut a lesson on why "math is beautiful.." Come back soon and I will be thoroughly convinced that math, and medicine, and life itself IS beautiful!! Love, Carrie

Dr. Wilhite,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
You're the strongest person I have ever known. I know you will defeat this disease. Heck, if you can handle me as a student then this should be no problem. :-)
Remember you always told me to take things one day at a time. Each day forward is one day closer to your better health.
And now, a little something for the lighter side.
How many statisticians does it take to change a lightbulb?

Cheers,
Jim Davies

Paula,
The Barton family is amazed, again, at the way in which you meet the challenges of life. I still find it interesting that a human can see numbers in color. It sounds like yall have things under control and hopefully everything will turn out for the best. You and John will always be in our prayers. I know Jessica wants to see you and thinks the world of you. Get well so we can listen to your beautiful playing at church.
Love,
Judy, Jessica, and J. Barton
